What a twisted question actually looks like

Open any Physics book and you will find this sum: a solid disc rolls down a smooth slope, find its acceleration. You have solved it fifty times. You are confident.

Now here is the exam version. The same disc rolls down the same slope — but the slope itself is free to slide on the floor. Suddenly the sum feels new. It is not new. It is the same idea with one extra moving part.

This is where marks quietly disappear

Most students do not lose marks because they never studied the chapter. They lose marks because they only ever practised the plain version. When the setup changes, the method feels unfamiliar, and the clock is running.

Three levels of the same idea

  • Straight: the book version. One object, one clean setup.
  • Twisted: one thing changes. The surface moves, or a second force appears.
  • Double twist: two ideas join. Rolling plus a hanging block, or rotation plus energy loss.

A good paper mostly lives at level two. Top ranks are decided at level three. If you only train at level one, the paper will feel unfair — even though every idea in it was in your syllabus.

How to practise this yourself

Take any solved example. Change one thing — make a fixed surface move, remove a given value, or ask for a different unknown. If you can still solve it, you own the concept. If not, you had only memorised the steps.
